With the UEFA European Championship now in full swing, and the Copa América starting this week, soccer is on the minds of many fans around the world.
They may be overshadowed by Boston’s other successful sports fandoms, but Massachusetts still has many passionate soccer fans.
Boston ranked among the top market for viewers of the U.S. national team during the 2022 World Cup, the last major men’s soccer tournament.
The state has produced talented players who have found their way to the U.S. national team and Boston is the soon-to-be home to a brand new women’s soccer team.
The region is also home to a number of immigrant communities where a love of the sport runs deep.
Community hubs in neighborhoods with large Irish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Brazilian, Mexican, Guatemalan and Salvadoran populations, are sure to draw crowds of fans tuning in for the Euro and Copa América games.
We asked readers to share their favorite spots to watch soccer in Greater Boston, and they delivered with the best bars, pubs, and watch parties to see the games.
Among the favorites was The Greatest Bar in the West End, The Banshee in Dorchester, and Parlor Sports in Somerville.
“[There’s] no better place [than The Greatest Bar] in Boston to watch the big international tournaments,” Andy from Charlestown said. “Three floors, tons of screens, and the countries playing will be well represented in the crowd.”
Conor from Brighton told us he first visited The Banshee a decade ago and “I’ve been coming back ever sense.”
“There’s plenty of TV’s for all the games and an amazing staff. It’s my favorite bar in Boston by far,” he said.
And for a viewing experience with “great food, good beer selection, and great atmosphere,” head to Parlor Sports, according to John from Wilbraham. His advice: “Just get there early!”
This year marks the first time since 2016 that the Copa América will be held in the United States.
Unlike in 2016, there will be no games held at Gillette this year, meaning soccer fans in Greater Boston will have to rely on watch parties to get their tournament fix.
