MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – A man is recovering in the hospital after he was shot in a Tuesday night robbery in east Montgomery.
Montgomery police say the victim was approached by someone demanding money outside of Tipico De Mexico near Malcolm Drive. The victim was shot after refusing to give up any money.
Jose Vazquez, the owner of Tipico De Mexico, identified the victim as his stepfather, who also works at the restaurant.
“He’s going to make it. He had to have surgery done,” said Vazquez. “They had to replace his hip.”
Vazquez noted this isn’t the first time his business has been robbed, recalling one incident when a suspect pointed a knife at his wife and ran off with the cash register.
Vazquez said he feels that many Hispanic and Latino-owned businesses have been targeted lately in the capital city.
“You don’t feel safe,” he said. “You’re always on the lookout and you’re always looking, even though we’re in the nicest areas in Montgomery. It’s still happening.”
No surveillance camera is set up behind the restaurant, which Vazquez said he believes makes identifying the suspect harder.
