TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The Microsoft operating system was shut down for commercial computers across the nation due to CrowdStrike on Friday — affecting the functionality of places such as airlines and 911 services to name a few.
Across Kansas, drivers license offices are still being impacted by the outage and flights across the country are continuing to be canceled or delayed.
Director of Information Technology for Shawnee Co., Marc Price, spoke in Monday mornings County Commission Meeting to discuss the recovery in the county thus far.
Following the outage, Price explained that while it takes roughly a minute to fix a computer, they have to touch each one to have them back up and functioning.
Price said it’s important for companies to have alternative strategies in place and be aware of what adverse operations look like in the instance that something like this happens again.
”How do you function without computers? I know it’s a scary thought but Friday was a reminder that computers can go away and you still have to be able to do as much of your job as possible. Always be prepared and look at your plans of how you function,” said Price. “It might be what phone numbers do you need to have to call. That was one of our issues is everyone relied on the computers and contact numbers, if they were not in your phone, couldn’t be got from the computers. Having a saved list somewhere not on a county system with contact information or even a printed off list with contacts is something important to have.”
Price said Shawnee Co. has roughly 1,000 computers, 800 of which were affected by the outage. As of Monday morning, they still had around 100 they needed to fix.
