Marquette, Mich. (WZMQ) – A summer day camp for girls, focused on technology and robotic programming is taking place this week at Northern Michigan University. Camp Infinity is a series of week long sessions that introduce girls in grades 5th through 8th to the world of computer programming and internet technology through hands on activities. This year Camp Infinity will be held at 10 colleges across the state, including the first time in the UP. Camp Director Christina King says the girls only approach allows for greater learning.
“The boys sometimes outnumber the girls with their interest. And this really allows girls a chance to really control the field. They really get to have ownership in what they’re doing and they it’s very geared towards them.” Said King.
Camp Infinity is put on by the Michigan council of women in technology, who’s goal is to increase the amount of girls in the technology field. Organizer Katina Clouter says that Michigan is poised to be a leader in this area.
“To make Michigan the number one state in technology, and we do that by delivering programs and inspiring girls to the field.” said Clouter.
the week ahead will include a panel discussion with local women in tech as well as a presentation of their work on Friday.
