STORRS, Conn. – The second-ranked Boston College men’s hockey team scored three goals in the third period, but was unable to complete the comeback, falling to UConn by a score of 5-4 in Hockey East action on Friday evening at the Toscano Family Ice Forum.
BC falls to 7-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in Hockey East, while UConn improves to 6-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in league play.
Trailing 3-1 going into the third period, BC and UConn combined for five goals in the final 20 minutes. Ryan Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) cut it to within one early in the final period, but UConn scored their fourth of the night midway through the frame to push the lead back to two.
The two-goal Husky lead held for nearly eight minutes until Andre Gasseau (Garden Grove, Calif.) followed up on a rebound from just outside the crease to make it a one-goal game again. UConn scored an empty-net goal with just under one minute remaining to make it a 5-3 game. Aidan Hreschuk (Long Beach, Calif.) scored his second of the night late in the game as BC continued to push to try to send the game to overtime.
The Eagles had opened the scoring early in the contest, grabbing its first of the night inside the opening five minutes of the game. Hreschuk ripped a shot from the point that made its way through the UConn defense and goaltender into the back of the net.
The Huskies responded by scoring three goals inside of the first five minutes of the second period to go ahead 3-1 with Hudson Schandor, Kaden Shahan and Tristan Fraser each tallying a goal.
Jacob Fowler (Melbroune, Fla.) and Jan Korec (Bratislava, Slovakia) combined to make 41 saves.
