The Rose d’Or Latinos returns to Content Americas tonight with a lavish gala. Jury chairman Marcos Santana gives his take on the event’s importance, while we also profile Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Eugenio Derbez.

Content Americas is proud to host the second edition of The Rose d’Or Latinos Awards, which define the gold standard for excellence and achievement in TV and audio programme-making across Latin America, US Hispanic, Spain and Portugal.

The ceremony takes place tonight at the Hilton Miami Downtown, celebrating the best in Hispanic entertainment. Welcome drinks start at 6pm, with the event proper at 6.30pm in the Concerto ballroom.

The nominees for the second edition of the Rose d’Or Latinos Awards have been announced, with six finalists in each of the 12 categories selected from more than 350 entries. The categories are: Drama Series, Comedy or Dramedy Series, Miniseries or Limited Series, Telenovela, Documentary, TV Movie or Streaming Film, Competition Reality, Docu-reality or Factual, Comedy or Variety Entertainment, Kids, Youth and Audio.

The finalists were voted for by a jury of more than 180 leading executives from acquisitions, commissioning and production from across the Lat Am, Spanish, Portuguese and US Hispanic television industries.

Marcos Santana

Jury chairman Marcos Santana, the former president of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises and current CEO of Mas Ros Media, says: “In this second edition of the prestigious Rose d’Or Latinos Awards, held during a period of great creative fervour, change, major challenges and arguably the greatest transformation the entertainment industry has ever experienced, I congratulate all the finalists selected to compete for this esteemed honor. Undoubtedly, their dedication and effort have set them apart from the other participants.

“Amid the excitement and significance of the Rose d’Or Latinos Awards, which once again bring the industry together in a moment of recognition and celebration, I also extend my congratulations to everyone who participated but was not selected.”

Regarding this year’s crop of finalists, Santana adds: “As we all know, series, films and, in general, all the content that makes up entertainment are mostly aimed at touching our hearts, awakening our vision, sometimes changing our way of seeing things, taking us to other places, opening doors and minds, where sometimes they become part of the memories of our lives. From Tarkovski and Bergman, through Scorsese and Woody Allen, to Iñárritu and Barry Jenkins, the seventh art has become a necessary spectacle in everyone’s life.

“This is why the Rose d’Or Latinos Awards are nothing less than a huge motivation for each and every one of us, producers, directors and filmmakers in general to do our work better and better, and in this way manage to overcome the enormous transition our industry is going through at the moment,”
he adds.

The jury deciding the winners has been expanded this year and includes executives from across Ibero-America. Among more than 30 executives who have joined this year’s jury are buyers, commissioners and executives from companies such as Amazon Studios, TelevisaUnivision, Telemundo Studios, SkyShowtime, Warner Bros Discovery, Paramount Global, Globoplay, Spotify, Sony Pictures Television, Movistar Plus+, RTVE, DirecTV and Screen Capital.

Rose d’Or gala 2024

Santana explains: “In this second edition of the Rose d’Or Latinos Awards, we have worked once again to select a very representative and diverse group of jurors from the Ibero-American industry, seeking a balance of looks with experience in all areas and covering all angles, based on the premise that Oscar Wilde always said, ‘Every time people agree with me I feel I’m wrong.’”

While this is only the second Rose d’Or Latinos, the Rose d’Or Awards have been taking place in Europe for many years. “Established in 1961 by Swiss Television in Montreux, these awards have since become an emblematic event for the European Broadcasting Union and the international television industry,” adds Santana.

“Bringing them to the Ibero-American market has been a significant achievement and a notable recognition of our work in these regions. The creativity and diversity of the talent that produces these programs, both behind and in front of the cameras, has never before been recognised by such a prestigious and distinguished European-origin award as the Rose d’Or.  I am thrilled to once again be part of the next stage of growth for these prestigious awards.”

This year, the Rose d’Or Latinos recognizes SAG- and Emmy-winning Mexican actor and producer Eugenio Derbez with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Derbez will also give a keynote speech during Content Americas, on Wednesday at noon in the Concerto ballroom.
