Dr. Jose L. Dotres

Miami-Dade is evolving, shaped by rapid technological advancements, a shifting economy, and a dynamic cultural landscape.

The world our students will inherit is changing faster than ever, demanding new skills, new mindsets, and new pathways to success. Education does not begin and end within classroom walls. It happens everywhere — at home, in workplaces, at cultural institutions, and through the connections students build in their communities.

Every child in Miami-Dade carries a world of potential, and unlocking that potential is a shared responsibility. If this interconnected approach was valuable in the past, it is now indispensable — an essential foundation for navigating the complexities of today and the transformations that lie ahead. Schools, families, businesses, nonprofits, postsecondary institutions, and government agencies each hold a vital thread in the fabric of a student’s journey.

No single entity can shape the future alone.

The most profound learning experiences emerge not just from textbooks but from real-world opportunities that prepare students to adapt, innovate, and contribute actively to our local economy and civic life.

The foundation of learning begins at home, where families instill character, resilience, and curiosity. Schools build upon that foundation, but they are just one of many brushstrokes on the canvas of a child’s development.

Community organizations enrich learning through STEM and arts programs, student leadership experiences, and mentorship. Postsecondary institutions provide students with early access to college-level coursework and career training. Private industry partners open doors to internships and apprenticeships, offering hands-on experience in fields ranging from healthcare to technology. Government agencies ensure students have access to essential resources, and philanthropic partners provide crucial funding that helps pilot innovative ideas and expand opportunities.

Together, these interconnected elements create an education ecosystem that prepares students not just for graduation but for life — whether they choose to pursue higher education, enter a specialized training program, enter the workforce, join the military, or engage with their community in other ways.

What does it mean to be truly prepared for the future? Academic achievement is important, but so are the experiences and soft skills that help young people navigate an ever-changing world. The ability to think critically, adapt, and collaborate is just as essential as mastering reading, math, and science.

As a community, we can define what success looks like for Miami-Dade’s graduates — what they should know, what they can expect, what they should be able to do, and how we can best support them along the way. By working together, we can align our priorities, identify gaps in our offerings, and develop targeted solutions that support student success.
This is a conversation we must have together to ensure our schools are more relevant and valuable in the communities they serve. I invite you — parents, educators, community members, business leaders, industry partners, and non-profit and philanthropic organizations — to share your insights. What opportunities should we expand? What skills do you believe will be most valuable for our students’ futures? Your input is invaluable in shaping the next steps for education in Miami-Dade.

Join the conversation and share your thoughts with us by emailing to canvasmiami@dadeschools.net. The future of education involves not only what occurs in schools — it’s about what we create together.

Dr. Jose L. Dotres is Superintendent of Schools, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS).
