SAN ANTONIO – The Memorial Day holiday is always known for the roadways flooded with traffic, but this year might set a record.

According to AAA, nearly 44 million Americans will be traveling in their vehicles, and in Texas, we’re expected to hit a roadtrip record.

And here is what to expect in San Antonio this weekend.

If it feels like there’s more construction than usual this week, that’s because there has been. TxDOT says its been ramping up roadwork to stay on schedule because starting on Friday, it is pausing a lot of those projects.

No roadwork happening on Loop 1604 from Friday through Monday.

That doesn’t necessarily mean traffic will be light. AAA is expecting Texas travel to hit a record as 3.1 million Texans are expected to hit the road. That’s 4% more than in 2023.

Here are some of the best and worst times to travel:

We’re already seen some heading out on Thursday, as traffic will be heaviest in the afternoon.

If you’re leaving on Friday, best to get an early start. You want to get off the road by 11 a.m. because in the afternoon, traffic is supposed to be heavier.

If you’re heading back from vacation on Monday, again, the afternoon is our problem time. After 7 p.m. is when traffic is supposed to get lighter.

Enjoy the holiday and stay safe.
