A Milestone in Latino Journalism
SAN DIEGO — On May 5, 1988, El Latino San Diego was born. Since then, it has become a trusted and enduring voice for San Diego’s Latino community. This Monday, the media outlet proudly celebrates 38 years of uninterrupted service, standing as a beacon of information, advocacy, and empowerment.
“We are part of the community. We think in English, but feel in Spanish—and we speak from the heart,” said Fanny Miller, Director and President of El Latino, in an interview three years ago—a sentiment that continues to define the publication’s mission today.
A Legacy of Commitment
Marking its anniversary on Cinco de Mayo, El Latino San Diego has become one of the most influential Latino-focused publications in the region. Its longevity is a testament to the dedication, resilience, and vision of its team.
“Being a vehicle for information and community connection for this long is challenging,” said Miller. “But we’ve always remained focused on our role—to uplift and inform.”
Publishing weekly and covering vital community topics takes consistent commitment, and El Latino has never wavered.
Meeting the Needs of a Diverse Community
From its inception, El Latino San Diego has addressed the pressing and ongoing needs of its readers—from immigration updates and civic engagement to education and family resources.
“The need for immigration information is still critical. So is offering a space where readers can voice concerns, understand how the education system works, and get help navigating it,” explained Miller. “These needs haven’t changed—some areas of the county are still underserved, and we’ve known that from the beginning.”
Topics featured in the publication include: News, Education, Health & Family, Business, Sports, Entertainment, Beauty, Love Club, and Classifieds.
From Humble Beginnings to Bold Growth
“We started as a biweekly newspaper in black and white,” Miller recalled. “Then, in 1992—during an economic downturn—we added color and decided to publish weekly. We expanded southward, and we’ve been a consistent presence ever since.”
Despite changes in format and distribution, the mission has stayed the same.
“People often say, ‘I’ve been reading you for years and didn’t know who was behind it.’ That’s okay. What matters is that they trust us.”
A Platform Rooted in Purpose
Now approaching four decades in publication, El Latino remains a community-first platform.
“It’s incredibly fulfilling to be able to help. The business has evolved tremendously, but we never forget our essence. I always say the paper belongs to the community—I just manage it,” said Miller.
“Readers call us, bring us stories, and share their concerns. That’s how we grow—together. And everything we’ve accomplished is thanks to the people who believe in us—and above all, thanks to God, who has guided us every step of the way.”
Celebrando Latinas
A standout initiative under the El Latino brand is the Celebrando Latinas Conference, an annual, nationwide event dedicated to uplifting and empowering women.
“It’s our way of giving back in a very intentional, high-quality way,” said Miller. “Many of the women who attend are loyal readers, and it’s a joy to celebrate them.”
The conference—focused on health, beauty, business, and finance—has become the largest Latina conference in the U.S.
