A vote to decide the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will be held June 24.
DALLAS — Now in her second term, U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett, D-Dallas, has a coveted position in her sights.
The Dallas Democrat is vying to become the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the lower chamber’s lead investigative committee.
A former public defender, civil rights and criminal defense attorney, Congresswoman Crockett argues her experience as a trial lawyer makes her the best candidate for the job, specifically stating she knows how to put a case together and how to defend it.
“Once we get to the majority, which I’m hoping and praying we get to, next cycle, that allows me to start to open up and do the things that would look like an impeachment,” the Democrat told us on Inside Texas Politics. “Now, whether or not we would put it to a vote, you know, he’s been impeached twice, couldn’t get convicted. There’s a lot of things to consider about whether or not to go forward.”
If Democrats regain control of the U.S. House after the 2026 election, the ranking member will become chair of the powerful committee, one of only a handful of positions in the House with the power to subpoena without a committee vote or discussions with the ranking member.
Since that could become Rep. Crockett, we asked her directly if she would pursue impeachment against President Donald Trump.
“I would absolutely at least do an inquiry. Absolutely. I think that there’s more than enough to inquire about,” the Congresswoman responded. “Such as this $400 million plane from the Qataris and whether or not that’s a violation of the emoluments clause of the Constitution. I think that we need to dig into all this crypto nonsense that he’s got going on. I think we need to dig into the fact that it looks like he’s giving out pardons for play.”
Three other Democrats are also vying to become the ranking member on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee: Rep. Stephen Lynch from Massachusetts, Rep. Robert Garcia from California, and Rep. Kweisi Mfume from Maryland.
The election is scheduled to be held on June 24.
Congresswoman Crockett also discussed the GOP budget bill that recently passed the U.S. House by one vote, calling it “cruel” while pointing to specific cuts in her district, Texas’ 30th Congressional District.
She says the bill would strip healthcare from 14 million Americans, including 130,000 people who would lose Medicaid coverage in her district.
And Crockett says it would take food off the table of at least three million Americans, including 115,000 constituents who rely on SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
The week of our interview with Congresswoman Crockett, she was back in CD 30 speaking to constituents about the bill.
“The number one question I had is do people understand why this bill is bad and why there is nothing beautiful in it,” Crockett said. “And I can tell you that Texas 30, God bless ‘em because they listen to real news, and they absolutely understand that these cuts are devastating and there is no good reason for the cuts.”
