The Harris County Houston Sports Authority during its board of directors meeting on Tuesday “approved funding” for “repairs to Daikin Park’s retractable roof; heating, ventilation and air condition system; fire alarm system; and lighting controls, among other projects,” according to Chandler France of the HOUSTON BUSINESS JOURNAL. In total, the repairs are “estimated to cost” $6.9M, though the “funding mechanism for the projects has yet to be determined.” The projects come after a recent facilities condition assessment showed that the Astros ballpark will need $836.5M in “maintenance over the next 20 years.” The most expensive of the recently approved projects is “for sunshade steel repainting on the permanent roof structures over the mezzanine and the first and third base seating,” which the Astros expect to cost $3.4M. The other $3.5M is “for future repair needs, including HVAC repairs, fire alarm replacements and lighting controls replacements.” The most expensive of these projects is the “controls upgrade for the retractable roof, which is expected to cost” $2.3M. After the 2024 season, the Astros “remodeled Daikin Park’s warehouse cooler system and replaced the stadium’s bowl audio speakers.” The Astros also plan to “replace all of the seats at Daikin Park following the 2026 World Baseball Classic” (HOUSTON BUSINESS JOURNAL, 7/8).
