Providence Bruins coach Ryan Mougenel speaks after beating Springfield

The Providence Bruins advance in the Calder Cup playoffs after beating the Springfield Thunderbirds in the first round.

  • Ryan Bourque, son of Bruins legend Ray Bourque, has been named assistant coach of the Providence Bruins.
  • Bourque brings AHL playing experience and coaching experience from Cushing Academy, the South Carolina Stingrays, and the U.S. National Team Development Program.

The Boston Bruins are keeping it local with a new addition to their coaching staff.

In a press release on Wednesday, July 9, the organization announced that Ryan Bourque will be joining the staff as an assistant coach for the Providence Bruins.

Bourque, a Boxford native, has an extensive hockey background that spans both playing and coaching experience, most recently coaching at Cushing Academy in Ashburnham.

The son of former Bruin and Hockey Hall of Famer Ray Bourque played professionally in the AHL for Hartford, Hershey, Bridgeport and Charlotte, totaling 85 goals and 118 assists in his 585 appearances. He played in one NHL game for the New York Rangers.

Before coaching at Cushing, Ryan Bourque was an assistant coach for the South Carolina Stingrays from 2021-2023, as well as an assistant coach of the U.S. National Team Development Program in 2023-24.

“I am both honored and grateful to join such a talented coaching staff in Providence,” Bourque stated in the press release. “Being fortunate enough to experience the Bruins organization firsthand as a kid, I don’t take for granted the rich history and tradition that comes with representing the Bruins.”

He added: “To now stand alongside this passionate fan base is nothing short of a dream come true for me and my family.”

His father made history as a Bruin, holding NHL records for most career goals, assists and points by a defenseman. He is a 19-time NHL All-Star and has his number, 77, retired by both Boston and the Colorado Avalanche. Now, Ryan Bourque will have the chance to be a part of the family tradition.

He joins head coach Ryan Mougenel, assistant coach Trent Whitfield and goaltending coach Mike Dunham for the Providence Bruins’ 2025-26 season.
