From the roof to the gates, Miami International Airport is currently undergoing a major glow-up. It’s all thanks to a massive $9 billion transformation set to handle present day and future travel demands, as more people pass through its terminals each year.

Known as the Future-Ready Modernization in Action (or M.I.A.) plan, work has already started on upgrading the airport’s aging infrastructure and accommodating growing traffic, as passengers soared to 56 million last year with an expectation to reach 77 million by 2040. This includes a new concourse, parking expansions, modernized terminals and improvements to hundreds of conveyance units, such as escalators and moving walkways.

The major overhaul has reportedly generated $252 million in business revenue and 2,865 jobs for the local construction industry. Though it’ll take some time to fully complete, read on for a breakdown of some of what’s to come.

New parking spaces

Under the plan, MIA sets out to expand the existing Flamingo Garage, which will add 2,240 parking spaces for both passengers and employees. The seven-story facility would include 50 electric vehicle charging stations, 34 oversized vehicle spaces as well as 34 ADA parking spaces. It is on track for completion by December of this year.

An upscale airport hotel

A luxury Westin hotel is also headed for the airport, with 450 rooms, a rooftop restaurant with 360-degree views, outdoor pool deck, spa, fitness center, conference space and more. It would be directly connected to Concourse D through a pedestrian bridge and is set to welcome visitors in 2027.

Jet bridge-mounted wheelchair lifts

Another big step towards improving accessibility and making air travel truly better for everyone, MIA is installing wheelchair lifts on its jet bridges across all terminals. This upgrade streamlines the boarding process for passengers with limited mobility as they board and disembark from their flight.

A significant milestone in the plan is the addition of Concourse K, the airport’s first terminal expansion in over two decades. Set for completion in 2029, the $600.6 million project would add six new passenger gates and boarding areas for domestic and international flights. The 300,000-square-foot concourse would also involve post-security concessions with more dining and shopping options, a new passenger lounge and enhanced baggage handling systems.

Revamping the oldest terminal

A $7.4 billion investment will go into redesigning the Central Terminal — the airport’s oldest — which will roll out in phases. It will undergo a four-level expansion with new concessions spaces and a post-security corridor between Concourses E and F. The plan also includes improving passenger flow with a vertical circulation core and new consolidated TSA checkpoints in E and F. The existing ceiling and roof structure would also be raised to bring in more natural light.
