SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A Hazmat fire involving a train is active near the Salt Lake City Airport, according to Salt Lake City Fire. Fire crews are actively responding to this incident.
“We are working on an active hazmat in the area of 436 N Neil Armstrong Road,” Salt Lake City Fire posted on X. “This was a fire involving a train. The haz-mat is due to the diesel leaking.”
Authorities received the report of the train fire shortly before 11:45 a.m., according to Cpt. Chad Jepperson, Salt Lake City Fire. Fire crews arrived on scene to find the train on fire.
“The belly tanks that hold the fuel to run the apparatus were leaking and were on fire,” Jepperson said. “On both sides of the train.”
The train had reportedly derailed at the location. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and put a patch on the leak to stop the flow of diesel. It took crews around 30 minutes to get the fire under control.
“We did lose approximately 50 gallons into the ground,” Jepperson said. “We’ve estimated about 300 gallons left in that tank.”
The incident has reportedly caused traffic in the area, affecting nearby businesses. It is still unknown what caused the train to derail, Jepperson said. This incident happened on an independent rail line, Jepperson said.
Health Dept. officials are responding to the scene. No injuries have been reported. This is an ongoing incident.
This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post as new information becomes available.
