Dana White’s Contender Series began back in 2017. Since then, the Contender Series has produced some big-name upcoming stars like Dan Ige, Sean O’Malley, Geoff Neal, Maycee Barber, and Edmen Shahbazyan. In short, it has been a huge success for finding talent.

A Contender Series fight is one that has stakes like none other, where fighters must showcase their skills to impress the UFC president enough for a contract with the promotional giant.  Holding the Contender Series with a smaller cage inside the UFC Apex venue makes for a tense atmosphere, and with only close friends and family of the competing fighters in attendance as spectators. Emotions always run high, as a limited number of contracts can be given out on any given night, and many fighters can potentially have their dreams snubbed out solely because of bad luck.

In rare cases, however, a fighter gets a second look. This series will examine those.

Cam Rowston (11-3 MMA)

Age: 30 years old

Height: 6’2″ / Reach: ?

Weight Class: Middleweight (185lbs.)

First DW’s Contender Series Fight: 2024 (Week 2)

Old DW’s Contender Series Opponent: Torrez Finney (8-0 MMA)

Second DW’s Contender Series Fight: 2025 (Week 2)

New Opponent: Brandon Holmes (5-0 MMA)

First Contender Series Fight

Cam Rowston first competed on the Contender Series back in 2023. Rowston entered that fight with an 8-2 record and was a veteran of multiple promotions including BRACE, Superfight MMA, New Generation Cage MMA and Shuriken Fight Series. Rowston even had at least one pro Muay Thai bout and trains with City Kickboxing.

Rowston’s two losses before his first appearance on the Contender Series were to Jacob Malkoun and Isi Fitikefu. Malkoun is now in the UFC and has been since 2020, boasting a 4-3 record with the promotion. Fitikefu, who is now 9-1 as a pro, fights under the ONE FC promotional banner where he has been featured on the main card of a few events.

Heading into his first Contender Series fight, Rowston had actually never defeated a fighter with a winning record. Best opponent that he defeated in pro MMA was 4-9 at that point.

An interesting fact is that Rowston was actually called up to fight on the Contender Series a year prior, in 2023, but was forced to withdraw from his matchup with Chad Hanekom.

First Contender Series Opponent

Rowston took on none other than Mr. Contender Series himself, Torrez Finney. Torrez also took on Yuri Panferov who appeared on Week 1’s Redemption Edition-in his first contender series bout as well.

Cam went the distance with Torrez and lost a unanimous decision. Rowston put up enough of a fight to thwart Finney’s shot a redemption. Of course, Finney would have to return yet again to get himself into the UFC in an unprecedented third appearance on the Contender Series.

Finney returned just six weeks later and finished a 7-1 Abdellah Er-Ramy in the first round to finally secure a UFC contract. Since then, Finney has only competed once under the promotional banner. On April 5th, Finney snagged a split decision victory over 10-4, Robert Valentin (The Ultimate Fighter Season 32 runner up). Finney also had a bout scheduled for the beginning of August against Azamat Bekoev, but withdrew.

With everything taken into account, Finney is a loss that has aged well for Yuri, and the same can be said for Cam.

The Road Back

Since losing to Finney nearly a year ago, Rowston has logged plenty of octagon time.

Cam took two rounds to submit a then, 1-3, Aerdake Apaer, two months after his CS loss. And about a month after that, Cam finished 3-1, Blair Bretag, in the second round by rear naked choke.

In February of this year Rowson fought a then 4-3, Alfred Stoddart, to a unanimous decision victory.

The tactic worked. Three fights and two finishes in less than a year for the ‘Battle Giraffe” and UFC came knocking once again.

Gameplan/New Opponent

For his shot at redemption on the Contender Series, Rowston will be taking on Brandon Holmes. Brandon a 28-year-old undefeated fighter. Brandon is a veteran of both the CFFC and Fury FC promotions. To date, his best win was his most recent, a third round last second finish against 6-5, Zach Borrego, back in May. That’s the most experienced fighter that Brandon has faced in his career. Borrego actually appeared on the Contender Series himself, missing weight and getting finished by highly touted prospect Bo Nickal in 2022.

Holmes, despite his inexperience, has gone the distance twice in his career. And he’s fought a guy that has seen UFC caliber fighters before. Should be an interesting fight as on paper Brandon is way less experienced of a pro fighter that wasn’t even who Rowston was originally supposed to face. Cam was going to fight a 10-0 Jon Kunneman before Jon was forced to withdraw due to a rib injury. With that in mind, Cam will definitely need a finish in order to earn a UFC contract.
