SALT LAKE CITY – Driven, together, and a team full of potential are three phrases to describe the University of Utah volleyball program going into the 2025 season. After almost nine months, the Utes are back and ready to put the volleyball world on notice.

Coming off a remarkable 2024 campaign, the Utes had a 25-6 record overall and a 14-4 conference record, which was good enough to earn them their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2021.

With all the success the Utes had last season, they view it as a building block heading into 2025.

“We have a lot more confidence going into this season knowing how high a level we were able to compete at last year,” junior outside hitter Kamryn Gibadlo said.

A valuable takeaway from last year for the team was the experience that came from going to the NCAA Tournament. For many of the Utes, it was their first appearance in postseason competition, and head coach Beth Launiere could sense her team was a little tight during the tournament. As such, Launiere sees last years’ experience in the NCAA Tournament as a learning opportunity.

“It whet their appetite to see how fun it is to get to the NCAA Tournament, and they want more of that,” Launiere said.

The Utes currently sit at No. 23 in the AVCA preseason rankings and come in at No. 4 in the Big 12 preseason poll. Gibadlo, as well as senior middle blocker Emrie Moea’i, both received spots on the Big 12 preseason team.

Aside from the returning talent, Utah also brought in an impressive batch of newcomers, including freshman outside hitter Devyn Wiest; a member of the USA U19 National team. Wiest loves how welcoming the program has been to her.

“Everyone wants everyone to be the best,” Wiest said.

Utah Volleyball will begin the 2025 season with the Utah Classic, an annual weekend of matches at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

“You put in a lot of hard work in the preseason and get to celebrate with your fans to start the season, there’s nothing better,” Launiere said.

The Huntsman Center has an “electric” feel as Gibadlo described it ahead of the three matches in three days the Utes are slated to play, starting with a Top 25 matchup against No. 24 Dayton Friday night. That contest will be followed up by Saturday’s match against Lafayette and Sunday’s match against former conference foe Washington State.

Launiere, Wiest, and Gibadlo all hinted they can tell there is a special feeling around the program this year. The love for their teammates off the court looks to help lead the Utes on the court.

“This year we are really close with each other, I can say everyone is my best friend,” Gibadlo said.

“Our goal is to be one of the top teams in the Big 12 and go as far as we can in the tournament,” Launiere added.

Winning a conference championship is a goal that many set out for, but the Utes believe they can bring the Big 12 Championship to Salt Lake City.

“The Big 12 is such a competitive conference, and being able to win it all would be such a big achievement to bring back to the school,” Wiest said.

With experience, confidence, and togetherness, the Utes enter the 2025 season with their sights set on returning to the NCAA Tournament. Led by returning talent, impactful newcomers, and a culture built on love and drive, Utah Volleyball is ready to show why they are among the nation’s elite.
