Students at Texas A&M University-San Antonio are invited to network with accounting professionals 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Norris Convention Center.

Texas Society of CPAs-San Antonio is hosting the event, but the A&M-San Antonio chapter encourages accounting students to take this opportunity to network with professionals, Anabelle Ortega, president of TXCPA and accounting senior, said in an interview Sept. 17 on Zoom.

“We posted the event on Jagsync because our chapter wanted accounting students to come out to get their names out there,” Ortega said.

The annual event is free to all students, and there will be snacks and beverages.

Dennis Elam, associate professor of accounting and finance, said accounting professionals from different industries are attending the event.

“There are professionals from external CPA firms, there will be sole practitioners, those in the government and forensic accounting,” he said.

Elam urges students to dress business casual and bring a business card to hand out to other professionals. He said they do not need to bring their resumes.

”The important thing about a networking opportunity is that the individual you meet is able to get in touch with you,” he said. “Business cards are only $10 at Office Depot. Your business card should have your name, that you’re an accounting student at Texas A&M and an expected graduation date and the degree.”

Ortega said TXCPA also encourages students who are apprehensive about networking to attend.

“It is nerve wracking to go out there and show face in front of all those professionals,” she said.  “But that’s something we’re really trying to advocate for and what we want to communicate to students to attend these events and get comfortable around professionals.”
