Former Alabama national championship-winning quarterback AJ McCarron might be contemplating a run for statewide office, according to multiple media reports.

The Mobile native and former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback is reportedly considering whether to run for lieutenant governor or U.S. Senate.

A recent poll asked respondents whether they would vote for McCarron for either of those offices.

The poll also asked people if they would vote for Paul Finebaum for U.S. Senate.

AL.com staff received the poll and Yellowhammer News and 1819 News reported McCarron might be considering a run for office.

Efforts to reach McCarron were not successful.

An All-State football and baseball player at St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile, McCarron was a member of three Alabama teams that won the BCS national championship.

He served as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback for the title teams for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

McCarron won the Maxwell Award as the outstanding college player of the 2013 season, when he also was the runner-up in the balloting for the Heisman Trophy.

He last played football in 2024, when he quarterbacked the United Football League’s St. Louis Battlehawks in the league’s playoffs.

Since then, McCarron has talked football in a variety of media settings and most regularly on “The Dynasty: A Podcast on the Alabama Crimson Tide.”

McCarron, former Alabama All-American running back Trent Richardson and Crimson Tide announcer Chris Stewart provide the personalities for the podcast.

He has largely stayed out of politics until this year’s Mobile mayor race, where he endorsed eventual winner Spiro Cheriogotis.

“Growing up, youth sports shaped who I am,” said McCarron, a Mobile native, in a video shared by the Cheriogotis campaign. “It taught me teamwork, discipline, and heart.

“As a father of young children Spiro understands how important those traits are for kids nowadays. He shares the same passion for getting kids on the field and building character through sports.”

Candidates for lieutenant governor include Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, Alabama Secretary of Agriculture Rick Pate, Alabama commercial real estate developer Nicole Wadsworth and Opelika pastor Dean Odle.

Candidates for the soon-to-be open U.S. Senate seat — Sen. Tommy Tuberville is running for governor instead of seeking reelection — are Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson and former Tuberville and Donald Trump staffer Morgan Murphy.
