From Hopeful Optimism to a Testing Start

The Colorado Buffaloes kicked off their Big 12 campaign with high hopes, but after dropping their first two conference games, the reality has set in hard. Sitting at 0-2 in conference play and 2-3 overall, Coach Deion Sanders’ team faces a critical crossroads early in the 2025 season — a start that has tested not only the players but the coaching staff as well.

Accountability Begins at the Top

Known widely as “Coach Prime,” Sanders has built a reputation for demanding excellence and unwavering accountability. This week, he took full ownership of the team’s struggles during his weekly press conference in Boulder.

Asked how he could improve as the leader of the Buffs, Sanders didn’t hesitate. His answer was a bold declaration of intent: “Be more demanding. I wanna see what I wanna see and we’re gonna do it over and over again until I see it.”

This mentality speaks volumes about Sanders’ coaching philosophy. Winning isn’t just about talent — it’s about discipline, consistency, and relentless attention to detail. By doubling down on structure and repetition, Sanders is betting that sustainable success will come from collective effort and improved habits, not individual brilliance alone.

Building a Culture Amidst Adversity

With the Big 12 schedule only growing tougher, Colorado has little room for error. The Buffs’ internal struggle to find consistency will be tested repeatedly as the season unfolds.

Sanders’ call for non-negotiable standards reflects a coach ready to instill a culture of accountability from the ground up. It’s a tough ask, but one that could reshape Colorado’s trajectory if embraced by the team.

Coach Prime’s Moment of Reflection

When pressed on what he’s learned about himself this season, Sanders shared a moment of candid self-awareness. “To get more, you’ve gotta give more,” he explained. “And just because you are applying yourself and giving, don’t expect what you give. Sometimes you’ve just got to look at things and say, ‘it is what it is’ and turn the page.”

For a coach renowned for his confidence and charisma, this admission reveals the deeper layers of a leader confronting adversity head-on. In his third season at Boulder, Sanders isn’t just replacing key playmakers like quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way star Travis Hunter — he’s re-energizing a young roster still forging its identity.

The Road Ahead: Redemption in Fort Worth

This week’s matchup with TCU brings the Buffaloes back to Fort Worth for a pivotal Big 12 test. It’s a familiar foe — and one the Buffs stunned in Sanders’ debut game, an upset that catapulted Colorado back into national conversations.

Now, after a shaky start, the Horned Frogs represent more than just an opponent — they offer a chance for Colorado to reset and rewrite their season narrative.

If Coach Prime’s message of demanding more and giving more resonates, the Buffaloes could once again flip the script on the Big 12 and prove that their resurgence is far from over.
