Make Music Day will take place on the summer solstice and celebrates music performed by anyone and everyone across the city.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio is preparing for a summer of music with a mix of musical events lined up, and Make Music Day will serve as a signature event happening on the day of the summer solstice.

Make Music San Antonio is based on France’s “Fête de la Musique,” a national musical holiday inaugurated in 1982 in which anyone and everyone is invited to join and play music, or host performances.

Four decades later, the holiday has spread throughout the world and is now celebrated in more than 1,000 cities in 120 different countries.

On Friday, June 21 the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture will co-host a free, live music activation at Texas Public Radio from noon to 10 p.m. to kick off and celebrate Make Music Day.

San Antonians will get the chance to “make music” with drum circles, a sing along, karaoke and more.

“Make Music Day will give all of our residents and visitors a chance to experience the city’s diverse musical riches in a free and accessible way,” said Department of Arts & Culture Director Krystal Jones. “This event is all about coming together and making or enjoying music, and we encourage everyone in our community to join us.”

The line-up of San Antonio performers include 16 the Olympus, Andria Rose, Apollo Black, Combo Cosmico, Gavin Gonzalez and many more. See the full line-up here.

The event is free and open to the public. Bites and drinks from local vendors will be available for attendees to enjoy.

Other performances taking place as part of Make Music Day across the Alamo City include youth-focused events by OPERA San Antonio, the Classical Music Institute and The AM Project.

To find more musical events lined-up throughout the summer, visit The Department of Arts and Culture Event calendar here.
