Denver Broncos cornerback Riley Moss was flagged for a highly controversial pass interference penalty late in Sunday’s comeback win over the New York Giants.
Riley turned and attempted to play the ball while covering Giants wide receiver Beaux Collins, but officials deemed it a spot-foul DPI offense, moving the ball up to the two-yard line. Denver coach Sean Payton was understandably upset about the call, and he ran out into the field to confront the officials.
Payton promptly received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, moving the ball up to the one-yard line. New York punched it in for a touchdown one play later.
“That was silly,” Payton said when asked after the game about going into the field. “I just felt like — I’m close with a number of people on that crew. It just so happens that the last three times, the numbers haven’t been good. I knew the [previous] [Pat] Surtain penalty was wrong. So that’s hard because it made it first-and-5. It led to their first score. It’s happened one other time. I just wanted them to hear me, [but] you can’t do that.”
Fortunately, the blown call did not end up costing Denver the game. The Broncos got the ball back down 32-30 and they went 56 yards in 37 seconds before kicking a game-winning field goal in a 33-32 comeback win. So things worked out for Payton in the end, but that was a frustrating sequence at Empower Field at Mile High.
