Mount Joy-based Phoenix/Packaging has been acquired for an undisclosed price by Welch Packaging Group of Elkhart, Indiana.
Phoenix/Packaging is a maker of corrugated cardboard boxes that was founded in 1983 by members of the Davidson family. As part of the acquisition, Welch Packaging Group bought the 140,000-square-foot Phoenix/Packing plant at 1160 E. Main St. for $10 million. All 32 employees who work at the plant will remain.
Welch Packaging Group began in 1985 as Elkhart Container and became Welch Packaging Group in 2004 following several acquisitions. It now has more than 1,900 people at two dozen plants across seven states.
In 2024, Welch Packaging Group bought York-County based Innovative Packaging Solutions.
Although Phoenix/Packaging now has a new owner, it will continue to operate under its own name and be managed by members of the Davidson family, including John Davidson, William Davidson and Deborah Davidson Jessup.
“Partnering with Phoenix/Packaging reflects our desire to join forces with outstanding independent packaging companies led by strong leaders,” Scott Welch, president and CEO of Welch Packaging said in a statement announcing the acquisition. “We’re proud to welcome Phoenix/Packaging into our family of companies while preserving the legacy they’ve built.”
