When a team manages to snag a rotation player outside of the lottery, it’s a huge win no matter what. It would be nice if that player was a star, like Nikola Jokic or Giannis Antetokounmpo, but teams will gladly take a rotation player on a team-friendly rookie deal. The Utah Jazz did just this when they picked Walter Clayton Jr.
It’s taken Clayton no time at all to prove to the Jazz that they have a keeper in him. Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz explained how Clayton has left such a strong impression in such a short time. More than that, he believes Clayton’s inclusion into the starting lineup is inevitable.
“Clayton’s first NBA game showed off his complete skill set in helping the Jazz blow out the Los Angeles Clippers, as he chipped in 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals in just 18 minutes.
“The opportunity is there for Clayton to have a big role this season after the Jazz parted with Collin Sexton and Jordan Clarkson this past summer. It seems like only a matter of time before head coach Will Hardy goes with Clayton over veteran journeyman Svi Mykhailiuk as the team’s starting shooting guard, clearing the runway for his rookie to really spread his wings.”
Swartz even went as far as saying Clayton looks more further along than the other Jazz rookie.
” (Ace) Bailey and Clayton should both end up being foundational pieces for the Jazz moving forward, with the latter actually looking like the lottery pick of the two thus far.”
Clayton’s first test is coming up soon
At this point, praising Clayton early on in the season is beating a dead horse for Jazz fans because they already know how good he is. However, Utah is about to get healthier with the impending return of Isaiah Collier, who finished lasr season as their starting point guard.
Collier definitely has his question marks as a player, but his playmaking abilities are undeniable. He may also have extra incentive to prove himself with Clayton wasting no time making an impression and Keyonte George’s ascension.
When the Jazz are at full strength, Clayton will have to work harder to earn his keep. Utah traded up for him because they believe he can be a staple of their future. He’s shown thus far that he can be. The next step is fitting him in next to both Collier and George. Or maybe even better if all goes his way.
