ABC News’ Whit Johnson in Boston to introduce the ‘Boys with the Bus’
MAKE THE EMERGENCY LANDING. ALL RIGHT, YOU SEE HIM ON THE ANCHOR DESK AT GMA ON THE WEEKENDS AND WORLD NEWS TONIGHT ON SATURDAYS, AND REPORTING FROM WHEREVER NEWS IS HAPPENING DURING THE WEEK. ABC’S WHIT JOHNSON IS HERE IN THE NEWSROOM WITH US, AND YOU’VE GOT A GREAT STORY COMING UP ON GMA. YES, YES WE’RE EXCITED. I’M HERE IN BOSTON TO WHICH IS EXCELLENT. WELCOME, WELCOME. SO TELL US ABOUT THIS STORY. THE BOYS ON THE BUS. YEAH THE BOYS ON THE BUS. SO WE NEED SOMETHING POSITIVE AND UPLIFTING RIGHT. ESPECIALLY AS WE GET INTO SUMMERTIME TIME AND THE BOYS WITH THE BUS. THIS IS THIS GROUP OF HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS FROM MILTON ACADEMY. THEY DECIDED FOR A SENIOR PROJECT. THEY WERE GOING TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT. SO THEY ALL PULLED THEIR MONEY TOGETHER AND THEY BOUGHT AN OLD SCHOOL BUS. I DON’T KNOW IF YOU’RE SEEING SOME OF THE IMAGES HERE. THIS IS THEM WORKING ON IT, AND THEY PLAN TO TAKE THIS ON A ROAD TRIP ACROSS THE COUNTRY. BUT PART OF WHAT THEY’RE DOING IS THEY’RE REACHING OUT TO PEOPLE ON SOCIAL MEDIA. THEY’VE THEY’VE GENERATED 2 MILLION FOLLOWERS ON INSTAGRAM IN JUST THREE WEEKS. AND PEOPLE ARE HELPING OUT. THEY’RE SENDING THEM TIPS AND IDEAS AND THEY’RE REALLY TRICKING THIS THING OUT. AND I THINK ONE OF THE REASONS WHY THIS IS RESONATING SO MUCH IS THIS IDEA OF GROWTH LEARNING BY DOING, YOU KNOW, NOT BEING AFRAID TO FAIL. TRY SOMETHING. IF IT DOESN’T WORK, TRY AGAIN. AND A LOT OF PEOPLE, I THINK ARE SAYING, HEY, THAT’S A LESSON THAT WE CAN ALL USE. AND WE LOVE A GOOD STORY LIKE THIS. TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE COOL FEATURES ON THE BUS THAT THEY’RE DOING HERE, BECAUSE IT’S AMAZING TO SEE. YEAH, I’M WATCHING SOME OF THE VIDEO HERE. AND IF YOU GO ON THEIR INSTAGRAM, IT’S REALLY INCREDIBLE. THEY’VE GOT SOLAR PANELS, THEY’RE BUILDING A ROOFTOP DECK. THEY’VE GOT A KITCHEN, THEY’VE GOT ALL SORTS OF GADGETS AND GIZMOS, BUNK BEDS INSIDE. AND SO I MEAN, THIS ISN’T LIKE YOUR TYPICAL YELLOW SCHOOL BUS. THIS IS LIKE, YOU KNOW, THIS SORT OF SEAFOAM COLORED. YOU KNOW, THING THAT THEY’RE TAKING ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THEY’RE TURNING IT INTO AN RV SO THEY CAN GET A SPECIAL, SPECIAL LICENSE TO BE ABLE TO CAMP OUT IN CERTAIN PLACES. SO IT’S QUITE A PROJECT. AND AGAIN, IT’S IT’S THE POSITIVE RESPONSE THAT PEOPLE HAVE HAD ACROSS THE COUNTRY THAT’S REALLY RESONATING. HOW HAVE THEY GOTTEN THE MONEY TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS? I MEAN, I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE FOLLOWING THEIR JOURNEY. ARE THEY DONATING HIGH SCHOOL KIDS WITH, WITH WITH JOBS? I KNOW THEY’VE BEEN RAISING SOME MONEY, BUT ONE WORKS AT DUNKIN DONUTS, ANOTHER ONE IS LIKE, YOU KNOW, WORKS AT A GYM. THEY’VE BEEN TUTORING. THEY ALL PULLED THEIR MONEY TOGETHER. THE BUS COST $7,000. THEY STRIPPED IT, RIPPED IT TO SHREDS, AND NOW THEY’RE PUTTING ALL THEIR TIME AND ENERGY INTO BUILDING THIS THING FOR THEIR TRIP. I LOVE THIS, AND I LOVE THAT THEY MADE IT BLUE, TOO. YOU CAN’T MISS IT. EXACTLY. YOU WILL NOT MISS IT IF YOU SEE IT ON THE STREET. I LOVE IT. YOU CAN CHECK OUT WHIT AND THE BOYS WITH THE BUS TOMORROW MORNING ON GMA. THAT’
