The Duluth 1200 Fund has opened the doors for applications to their Storefront Loan Program, an initiative aimed at revitalizing the facades of local business districts within Spirit Valley and the downtown area of Duluth. Businesses and nonprofit organizations located within the eligible areas can now approach this financial opportunity to enhance the curb appeal and historical value of their exteriors.

Interested parties are looking at the chance to receive low-interest loans of up to $100,000, repayable over 17 years. Use of these funds is, however, restricted to external improvements; this includes a range of modifications such as new signage, awnings, windows, doors, and even artistic murals or improved landscaping, among other things. In a recent announcement, Laura Mullen, the 1200 Fund Board Chair, emphasized the program’s intent: “The Storefront Loan Program is all about breathing new life into Duluth’s time-tested neighborhood centers,” according to the official notice from the city.

While the program is presently focusing on Spirit Valley and downtown Duluth, future funding rounds may target different locations within the city. “We intend to continue the program annually until all program funds are spent, and our business districts are looking revitalized and welcoming,” Mullen additionally specified, hinting at the long-term vision for the project.

The program has garnered positive reactions from local business community leaders. Russ Salgy, President of the West Duluth Business Club, heralded the initiative as a significant asset for area enterprises, saying, “Duluth’s 1200 Fund’s Storefront Loan Program will be a great development tool for our area’s businesses to utilize for revitalization projects that will expand our business owners’ resource capacity, enhance our walkable vibrant district from shop to shop, and preserve our historic buildings with high-quality practices,” in a statement echoed by local businesses and organizations looking to tap into the resources for neighborhood improvement.

The program underscores a commitment from the 1200 Fund, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, to reinvest in community spaces in a manner that augments visual aesthetics and supports the overall vitality of Duluth’s neighborhoods. Applications are open until December 15, 2025. Those seeking application assistance or with further inquiries can contact the 1200 Fund via email at [email protected].
