MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) – A new $50,000 donation will help breathe new life into the Arts Center of Moultrie. Wednesday, representatives from the Fox Theatre in Atlanta presented the donation to help with major renovations.
May is Historic Preservation Month, so it’s the perfect time for the Fox Theatre in Atlanta to contribute to the historical value of arts and theatre programs across the state.
“Well, the most recent one I’ve been in is Winnie the Poo. I was the narrator. And I was really happy. I made a lot of friends, and I had a great part. The directing and casting were good, so it’s been my favorite thus far,” said Scarlett Allegood, a volunteer for the Arts Center of Moultrie.
Fox Gives is an outreach program that focuses on historic preservation of art programs across Georgia.
“Take a chance, don’t ever be shy about doing other things besides being on stage. Learning how to do sound, lighting, costumes, and props. There are so many ways we can be engaged,” Leigh Burns, the Fox Theatre director of community partnerships, said.
A donation to the Arts Center of Moultrie will help with renovations – including a new stage, refinished floors and a new paint job.
“This is actually a part of a much bigger project. The building is almost 100 years old. So we have a lot going on that needs to be redone, refurbished, and brought back to life,” said Joy Yost, director of the Arts Center of Moultrie.
“So, as you saw today, we have the theatre renovation, working on some carpeting and other details there. We also have a children’s museum underway; we also have other music studios and art studios. All of these are ever-changing, so lots of new things to see,” said Fox Theatre Manager Maegan Viohl.
The Fox Theatre plans to give grants to 12 performing arts centers across the state of Georgia.
“So we will continue this month to celebrate Historic Preservation Month, and then we will begin our new grant cycle with August 1st. And we have two workshops leading up to that,”Burns said.
