HBCU student athletes learn life skills ahead of tournament

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Before the HBCU Hoops Invitational Tournament tipped off at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort, organizers rallied the male and female student athletes together for a fireside chat.   

They gathered on Thursday evening, along with their coaches, to learn about getting their finances in order, health, wellness, and life after basketball.

Students athletes from Bethune-Cookman University, Florida A&M University, Edward Waters College and Florida Memorial University took part, as well as student athletes from Hampton University, Livingston College, Tuskegee University, and Barber-Scotia College.  

A host of panelists shared their life experiences, expertise, and took questions from the student athletes who were encouraged to network with the professionals and also seek mentoring opportunities.

Spectrum News 13 anchor Tammie Fields was honored to serve as emcee for the fireside chat.
