It sounds like the Mets and Padres will make a big trade, but it won’t involve the $340+ million starsIt sounds like the Mets and Padres will make a big trade, but it won’t involve the $340+ million stars

What a day. What a week. What a month it has been. The New York Mets took a scrub brush to the roster. They aren’t done yet. The hottest of the Mets rumors going on right now involve a potential trade with the San Diego Padres.

There are a lot of possibilities. According to The Athletic’s Dennis Lin, they won’t include the two superstars everyone is wondering about, Francisco Lindor and Fernando Tatis Jr.

It sounds like the Mets and Padres will make a big trade, but it won’t involve the $340+ million stars

The idea of the Mets trading Lindor seemed extreme when it was presented earlier this week. Likely, fans in San Diego had some of the same thoughts upon seeing New Yorkers put together their best package for Tatis. Even though their mission seems a little more straightforward, subtracting salary while trying to compete, it would have been a blow to remove one of the club’s best and most popular players.

Earlier today, we took a look at some different trade possibilities for the Mets and Padres at different weight classes. Lindor wasn’t included in any, but Tatis was. Based on the most updated Mets rumors, we have a better idea of who it is on the Padres roster David Stearns could be circling.

Padres have discussed Nick Pivetta, Ramón Laureano, Mason Miller, Adrián Morejón, and Jeremiah Estrada in talks with the Mets, per @Ken_Rosenthal @WillSammon @dennistlin.

San Diego has asked New York about young major leaguers and top prospects.

The Mets are looking to fill a few voids with these players. Nick Pivetta improves the rotation, Ramon Laureano is a solution in left field, and the rest of the names improve the bullpen. San Diego’s desire to add some of the young Mets players and top prospects comes as no surprise. If they can shed salary, they’d sensibly look to replace them with more affordable players.

At least at the moment, Lindor and Tatis sound like they’re staying put which doesn’t surprise anyone. There are plenty of significant trades these two teams can put together. Considering Stearns and A.J. Preller were able to agree on the 2022 trade of Josh Hader, we should have some confidence they’ll find some sort of agreement here.

Plans can always change. It will take one godfather offer from another club to make Stearns or Preller reconsider their stance on just about everything.
