University to implement recommendations after outside firm surveyed student-athletes and others following complaints over the summer

An outside review of Boston University’s Athletics Department, undertaken this past summer after some student-athletes raised concerns about how complaints were handled, has identified opportunities to improve internal processes and practices to support overall student well-being—as well as areas of strength in the program.

The review, by Bond, Schoeneck & King (BSK), a law firm experienced in higher education and collegiate sports, recommended developing more consistent orientations, more training, and more robust processes so that student-athletes know how to report concerns. The report also said it was important that once a complaint was received, it was processed and documented in close partnership with the offices at BU that handle those areas. It suggested more communication throughout the process as well.

The review identified athletic training and sports medicine, academic support, nutrition, and sports psychology as areas where Athletics thrives in working with students.

BU President Melissa Gilliam has asked various departments and experts from across the University to work with Athletics to implement the recommendations.

“I’m grateful to all our students, staff and coaches who cooperated with BSK’s outreach and contributed to this review,” Gilliam said in a statement. “Their experiences and observations were important to this process, and we welcome the firm’s recommendations. We are committed to continuous improvement, and the well-being of our student-athletes is our top priority.”

Drew Marrochello, BU assistant vice president and director of Athletics, said he appreciated the time and cooperation of those who assisted with BSK’s review.

“We have a dedicated team that is invested in the success of our student-athletes on and off the field,” Marrochello says. “We appreciate the information this review provided about how we can enhance our processes and our work with partner departments who help us provide the services and assistance our athletes need. We appreciate the time of others from across campus who will offer their ideas, expertise, and partnership in further improving the array of supports and services available to our athletes.”

The report by Bond, Schoeneck & King came at the request of the BU Office of the President, and it focused on feedback from current athletes, coaches, administrators, and others. The purpose of the review, BU officials say, is to focus on recommendations to improve Athletics for the future rather than on revisiting complaints from the past.

The BSK review looked at documents that included exit interview reports, annual surveys, complaints, concerns raised, and student-athletes’ disciplinary matters. Responses to an email survey sent to current and former student-athletes from the Class of 2024 through the Class of 2028 were collected. The review also included interviews of all student-athletes who volunteered to participate and interviews of University staff both within and outside of the Athletics Department.
