Forty-eight Fayetteville-Manlius School District students recently joined the Fayetteville-Manlius Hispanic Honor Society, Joaquín Sorolla Chapter, which is made up of students who have a deep interest in the Spanish language and high academic achievement throughout high school in their Spanish courses.
Students who are inducted into the society pledge to do the following:
- Remain enrolled in a world language course through their senior year;
- Maintain an overall GPA of 85 percent and a GPA of 90 percent or above in their Spanish language courses; and
- Complete a required number of extra-curricular events that demonstrate involvement with Spanish language and culture.
Past events in which students have chosen to participate include assisting with the F-M Spanish Club holiday wish tree, taking the National Spanish Exam, attending such events as concerts and poetry readings at local universities or community organizations, attending events with speakers at the high school, tutoring students of Spanish after school and community service with organizations that benefit the Hispanic community, such as La Casita cultural center.
