ALBANY, N.Y. — New York veterans who are disabled as a result of their service may now see significant tax relief in 2026.
New legislation signed into law by Governor Hochul establishes that any veteran living in New York with a 100 percent service-connected disability can receive a complete property tax exemption on their primary residence.
The property must be owned either by the veteran or their spouse. The law states that any county, city, town, village, or school district are now authorized to adopt or local law to opt for the tax exemption.
According to the legislation, veterans who qualify for the property tax emption were discharged or released under honorable conditions, have a qualifying condition as defined in section one of the veterans’ service law, and is considered permanently and totally disabled by the United States Department of Veteran Affairs.

The law takes effect immediately, and will apply to assessment rolls prepared after January 2, 2026.
