According to FlightAware, cancellations for Jan. 25 at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport have reached 1,012, and 23 delays have been reported.

ATLANTA — As Winter Storm Fern approaches metro Atlanta, flights coming in and out of the world’s busiest airport have already been cancelled for Sunday.

According to FlightAware, cancellations for Jan. 25 at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport have reached over 1,040, and at least 30 delays have been reported.

Most of the canceled flights (690) are Delta routes, as the airliner operates its hub out of Atlanta. Over 100 are with Endeavor (a Delta subsidiary) and t hen Southwest has 64 and Frontier has 31.

The cancellations and delays come as freezing rain from Fern begins to fall in the metro area. 11Alive meteorologists anticipate a long-duration wintry mix that will persist throughout the weekend.

11Alive’s Doug Richards spoke with travelers trying to leave Atlanta’s airport, including one woman who said she was unable to board a plane headed to her hometown, Houston, after celebrating a birthday.

Melody Patterson says another flight to Houston is available tomorrow, but winter weather may keep her at the airport overnight rather than in a hotel.

“So, I can get a hotel or somewhere to stay; however, I don’t want to miss my flight if there is an issue trying to travel and get back here to the airport,” Patterson said. “So, I’d rather come to the airport and stay versus staying away from the airport and having an issue or delay trying to get here.

Flights to and from cities outside Winter Storm Fern’s path, such as San Francisco, have also cancelled, highlighting the domino effect of winter weather.
