ATLANTA — Atlanta roads avoided much of the worst of possible icing from winter storm conditions that came through the metro region and northeast Georgia, but another, perhaps less expected issue, arose in Midtown.
11Alive’s Savannah Levins was reporting in Midtown Atlanta on Sunday morning, checking things out after the icing event had largely concentrated northeast of the city. While Atlanta saw ice on trees and structures, the roads didn’t really ice over.
It was those structures that proved a bit of a rare issue for Midtown pedestrians. Ice sheets formed on buildings, and once it warmed up, they began crashing to the sidewalk.
Savannah reported seeing multiple people have to dodge falling ice off Midtown buildings.
It’s not something your average Atlanta resident would’ve considered a problem when they woke up Sunday. Falling trees and limbs, yes. But not usually ice off buildings. It’s actually quite common in cities like Chicago, though, where reports frequently occur of falling ice chunks in the winter.
They can be quite dangerous — in 2011, a woman died when she was hit by a falling icicle.
Fortunately in Atlanta, it didn’t appear Sunday morning anyone was actually hit. But it’s certainly something to keep in mind the next time an ice event rolls around.
