A long-vacant office building in downtown Galveston is set to be redeveloped into a boutique hotel after years of sitting empty.
GALVESTON, Texas — A long-vacant office building in downtown Galveston is set to be turned into a boutique hotel — at last.
The Itex Group, which is headquartered in Port Arthur and has an office in Houston, expects to start construction on the historic Medical Arts Building at 302 Moody Ave. in February after receiving permit approvals from the city, company CEO Chris Akbari told the Houston Business Journal.
The plan is to convert the dilapidated 11-story building into a 120-room boutique hotel to be called The Quay, with suites and distinctly styled rooms as well as a first-floor restaurant and bar. Akbari said it will be part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, a brand for local, independent boutique hotels. Florida-based Driftwood Hospitality Management was tapped to manage the hotel.
In Greater Houston, two hotels are part of the Tapestry Collection: The Sam Houston Hotel in downtown Houston and The Chiefley Houston in the Galleria area.
