Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt and running back Cam Skattebo have been honored by the Big 12 for their roles Saturday in the Sun Devils’ 35-31 win over Kansas.
Skattebo, who rushed for 186 yards, shared offensive player of the week honors with Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks while Leavitt was named newcomer of the week.
Skattebo averaged 7.2 yards over 26 carries, which included six runs of 10 or more yards. Skattebo’s rushing total was the second most in FBS this week and contributed to a 313-yard day on the ground for the Sun Devils. This is the second conference honor of the season for the ASU running back, who amassed 297 total yards, including 262 on the ground, in the second week of the season against Mississippi State which earned him national offensive player of the week accolades.
Leavitt, a transfer from Michigan State, threw four touchdown passes and tallied 234 yards of total offense. He had 77 rushing yards on just 10 carries. The redshirt freshman also became the first ASU quarterback to throw for four touchdowns in a game since Joey Yellen did so in 2019 against USC when subbing for an injured Jayden Daniels.Tyler Loop of Arizona was special teams player of the week. He became the first kicker in Arizona history to make five field goals in a game in the Wildcats’ home loss to Texas Tech. He also became just the third player in the nation to make five field goals in a game this season, which included a make from 52 yards on Saturday. Loop’s converted PAT against the Red Raiders extended his perfect career mark of 116 consecutive made extra points.
Houston’s A.J. Haulcy was defensive player of the week. He recorded seven tackles and two interceptions in an upset of TCU.
The Sun Devils, picked last in the Big 12 in the preseason rankings, are 4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play heading into Friday’s 7:30 p.m. home game against conference favorite Utah, which holds the same record.
