Downtown Dallas stakeholders are holding their collective breath as AT&T Inc., the largest public company headquartered in the city, considers its real estate options. From city officials to real estate moguls, downtown shopkeepers and restaurateurs, interest in the telecom giant’s plans is at a fever pitch.
For now, AT&T’s global headquarters remains at Whitacre Tower in downtown under a lease that runs through 2030. However, the company has not confirmed its long-term plans for the site.
AT&T has repeatedly refused to answer questions about the company’s potential real estate moves in the Metroplex and how any workforce shifts could impact its downtown Dallas footprint. Dallas Business Journal reached out to the company for this story and received a one-sentence reply.
Dallas Business Journal broke the news Aug. 28 that AT&T (NYSE: T) has toured large suburban sites, including a Plano campus that ranks among the largest in the region, for a possible new office. In a Sept. 2 follow-up, DBJ reported that Dallas officials are working to keep AT&T’s headquarters in the city, according to statements City Manager Kimberly Tolbert made to the Dallas Economic Development Corp. Tolbert told the EDC that she and Linda McMahon, CEO of the Dallas EDC, have met with AT&T as a part of the city’s business retention strategy.
