Boston cracking down on summer violence, off-road vehicle hijinks
Warmer weather is bringing increased concerns about safety and violence in Boston. “Our administration goal is to make Boston a home for everyone,” said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. In its detailed plan to keep the city safe, Boston addressed gun violence, which is down overall, and behavior impacting quality of life. Off-road vehicles are becoming a common sight on Boston streets. In April, drag racers took over an intersection in the Back Bay at 2 a.m.“Do not come to Boston this summer to engage in this activity because we will seize your vehicles and equipment,” said Boston police Commissioner Michael Cox said.Cox said the “revelers” are typically from outside of Boston, and the vehicles are often stolen. “This is one of the primary complaints we do receive, and we hear you making sure we do something about that,” Cox said. The noise is also impacting quality of life.“I call it a serene place, but with that going on, it’s not serene,” said Boston’s Beatrice Burton. Burton enjoys Franklin Park but said the city needs to crack down on noise.“I would like to see all of us being able to hang out here together instead of just one person trying to take over,” she said. “They play their music too loud; they disturb everybody that comes through here.”
