STILLWATER – Oklahoma State distance runner Brian Musau continued his torrid season in the 5,000 Meters, shattering his own school record at Sound Running’s Sunset Tour in LA Saturday night with his time of 12:59.82.
Musau dominated a race that included several multiple Olympians and professional athletes, claiming the victory by nearly eight seconds overall. His time is the second-fastest ever run by a collegian indoors or outdoors and he is just the third collegian to ever break the 13:00 barrier after Northern Arizona’s Nico Young and Harvard’s Graham Blanks, who each did so indoors.
After winning his third career NCAA title and second at 5,000 Meters last month, Musau was named as a semifinalist for The Bowerman Award, bestowed to collegiate track & field’s top male and female athlete for the year.
He was just the second Bowerman Semifinalist in program history, joining Cowboy Olympian and NCAA Champion thrower Nick Miller, who was on the list in 2016. German Fernandez so far remains the only Cowboy to be named as a finalist for the inaugural award in 2009 following his NCAA title in the 1,500 Meters. Semifinalists were not named until 2010.
