PROVO — The Cougars are alone at the top.
On a week where BYU was idle as part of its second bye of the season, the Big 12 did the team a favor — or a couple — as part of Week 10 action. Over the weekend, Iowa State suffered its first loss of the season, and Kansas State was on the losing end on the road against Houston.
It all means BYU is the only undefeated program from the Big 12 — and one of only five in the country — as the team prepares for a road trip up I-15 for a rivalry contest against a down Utah team.
And if this is the last season for dynamic wide receiver Chase Roberts, what a way to go out. But the final four games of the season will likely be the toughest, simply due to the mounting pressure of an undefeated season on the horizon.
One thing is certain, though, the Cougars have what it takes to get the job done.
That’s why voters kept BYU at No. 9 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 rankings ahead of the first official release of the College Football Playoff rankings of the season on Tuesday — clearly the most important thing happening that day.
With the top-10 ranking, the Cougars lead a Big 12 that features four teams ranked after 10 weeks of action. Behind BYU in the rankings is No. 17 Iowa State, who suffered its first loss this season on Saturday, No. 21 Colorado and No. 22 Kansas State.
Arizona State and Texas Tech both received votes this week.
Oregon checks in at No. 1 in the latest ranking, receiving all 62 first-place votes to become the first unanimous No. 1 team in the country this season. Behind the Ducks is No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Miami and No. 5 Texas.
