The Big Dumper should be busy during awards season, but he won’t have to wait out the Gold Glove announcements. At least not this year.
MLB announced the finalists for the 2025 Gold Glove Awards, which honor each league’s best defensive performances at each position, on Wednesday. Raleigh — the American League’s Gold Glove and Platinum Glove winner at catcher last year — wasn’t on that list, which represents the top three vote-getters for each position category. The Gold Glove winners will be unveiled on Nov. 2.
When Raleigh won the Platinum Glove in 2024, awarded to the best overall fielder in each league, he became the first Seattle Mariners player to earn the honor since the award’s inception in 2011. That season, he led AL catchers in innings caught (1,122), Defensive Runs Saved (17) and in Statcast’s framing runs (+13 runs saved from his framing). This season, the All-Star and 2025 home run leader still accounted for +7 runs by Statcast’s framing runs metric, but he was graded at -4 Blocks Above Average and was in the 39th percentile among all catchers for pop time. He ranked 21st among catchers in Defensive Runs Saved (2).
Among the notable finalists, Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts was a finalist in the shortstop category in his first full season at the position. Betts is a six-time Gold Glove winner for right field. The Chicago Cubs had the most players named finalists with six, while the Toronto Blue Jays had six nominations for five players (Ernie Clement was named a finalist for both third base and utility). Clement tied with Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan with 22 Defensive Runs Saved for the most among MLB players this season.
According to MLB.com, 30 managers and up to six coaches from each team vote from a pool of players in their league (but not on players from their own teams). Those votes count for 75 percent of the selection total, and the SABR Defensive Index counts for the other 25 percent.
