The utility player and 2023 All-Star was DFA’d by the Atlanta Braves on May 23 to make room on the roster for the return of Ronald Acuña Jr.
Arcia has been with Atlanta since 2021 when he was traded there by the Milwaukee Brewers. During his time in Atlanta Arcia slashed .238/.296/.449. In 1349 at-bats, he had 321 hits, including 62 doubles and 48 home runs.
He has played 22 games at Coors Field. In 78 at-bats, he has 22 hits, including three doubles, one triple, two home runs as well as four stolen bases for a .764 OPS.
In 2025, he was ineffective in Atlanta. Over 25 at-bats, he slashed .194/.219/.226, hence the eventual DFA.
Although Arcia has primarily played as a middle infielder, he worked as a utility player. He has seven games at third base in addition to appearances in left and center field. According to DRS, Aricia is an average-to-slightly-below-average fielder.
In March 2023, Arcia signed a contract through 2025 for $7.3 million with a club option for 2026. Currently, he is still owed $1.376 million of this year’s $2 million for 2025.
Why the Rockies would choose to do this is anyone’s guess, especially with Thairo Estrada expected to return in the next week.
Obviously, he could provide additional infield depth for Ezequiel Tovar and Estrada. (Remember: The Rockies lost Alan Trejo and Warren Miller to free agency.)
Another possibility is that the Rockies are preparing to trade Ryan McMahon. There is no clear understudy for Ryan McMahon at this point, and Kyle Karros (No. 12 PuRP), while off to a solid start at Double-A Hartford, has been sidelined with an injury.
