ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Crews are working to clear a train that partially derailed in Smyrna overnight.
According to CSX, 17 cars carrying dry goods and wood tilted off the tracks near Campbell Road at around 2:20 a.m. on Friday. No hazardous materials were leaked, and nobody was injured in the incident.
CSX and local officials are working to find out what caused the derailment.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and working with our community partners to ensure that the safety of the public is the top priority during the cleanup process,” Smyrna Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Brian Marcos said.
The tracks cut through two neighborhoods with homes just steps away. James Damato’s backyards sits up against the tracks. He says the sound of the derailment overnight woke up the entire family.
“Like a loud, crash, bang. The whole house was just shaking and vibrating,” he said. “The main thing that crossed my mind first was – was there any like, spills?”
In statement to Atlanta News First a CSX said there were no hazardous materials spilled.
“No hazardous materials were released, no injuries were reported, and there is no current threat to the safety of the surrounding community. CSX appreciates the quick response from Cobb County first responders. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation,” a CSX spokesperson said.
By noon Friday, big trucks with new rails and railroad ties had already started to arrive on site to. CSX says they hope to have the tracks back online within 24 hours.
