An effort to finally kickstart development of a blighted North Dallas site, the former Valley View Center mall, moved forward this week after more heated back-and-forth.
Dallas City Council approved March 26 the $11.3 million purchase of a roughly 79,916-square-foot strip mall at 13305 Montfort Dr. The retail center is slated to be demolished and the site turned into a long-proposed park that will hopefully serve as the anchor of the planned 450-acre Dallas International District at Preston Road and Interstate 635.
The item was originally part of the consent portion of council’s meeting agenda. But a couple of city leaders including Council Member Paul Ridley, who pulled the item off the consent agenda, worried it would be premature to acquire the property until the city learned what the next owners intend to do with the site — the 110-acre former mall is now being marketed for sale after Beck Ventures failed to gain traction with redevelopment efforts.
Council Member Cara Mendelsohn questioned the development of a park in an area that has been floated as a long-shot contender for a possible future Dallas Mavericks arena.
