SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Family-run piano retailer Daynes Music has announced plans to close after more than 160 years in business. The company traces its roots to the early days of Salt Lake City,
The company announced it will shut down operations after serving generations of Utah musicians, schools and performing arts groups.
Founded in 1862, Daynes Music grew into one of the country’s longest-running music retailers and became an early Steinway & Sons dealer in the western United States.

Over the decades, the store supplied instruments to universities, concert halls, churches and private homes across the region.
Daynes also worked closely with organizations including the Utah Symphony and the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation.
Company leaders say the decision ends six generations of family ownership and more than a century of involvement in Utah’s music community.
Steinway & Sons plans to conclude its dealership relationship with Daynes in mid-April as the company winds down operations.
Remaining inventory, including grand and upright pianos, will be sold as the business prepares to close its doors.
