On Monday, the Denver City Council unanimously passed a blueprint for the Far Southwest area, charting a path for the next two decades with an emphasis on safer streets, local businesses, and community enrichment. The Far Southwest Area Plan, which was created with the input of Denver’s Community Planning and Development Department and in partnership with Council District 2, covers neighborhoods including Bear Valley, College View, Fort Logan, Harvey Park, Harvey Park South, and Marston, and was highly anticipated by local constituents. According to the City and County of Denver, this plan marks a significant milestone, being the eighth adopted under the Neighborhood Planning Initiative.
Leading the charge at CPD is Executive Director Brad Buchanan, who, having worked closely with the Denver community members, stressed the value of their contributions. Kevin Flynn, District 2 Council Member, pointed out the document’s vital role in channeling growth while preserving community character. “Creating plans in areas that never had them was the reason CPD launched the Neighborhood Planning Initiative almost a decade ago,” Buchanan told the City and County of Denver. Having undergone review by the Denver Planning Board and City Council’s Community Planning and Housing Committee last month, the plan, the community, and city planners look forward to seeing these policies take shape.
The plan revolves around establishing safer streets and diverse transportation options. With a target of no serious traffic-related injuries or deaths by 2045, the plan outlines a shift towards a safer and more environmentally responsible community. “By 2045, the Far Southwest area will have no serious traffic-related injuries or deaths,” Flynn emphasized, as obtained by the City and County of Denver, underscoring the commitment to not only improving street safety but also enhancing the quality of life by promoting accessibility and sustainability.
