Texas Border Business
EDINBURG, Texas – The 2025 Edinburg State of the City Address was a resounding success, celebrating the city’s unprecedented growth, economic strength, and commitment to Excellence in Action. Mayor Ramiro Garza, Jr. delivered a powerful speech reflecting on Edinburg’s remarkable progress over the past year and throughout his mayoral term, emphasizing record-breaking development, public safety enhancements, and infrastructure investments that have shaped—and will continue to shape—the city’s future.
“Edinburg is thriving like never before,” said Mayor Garza. “The numbers we’re seeing during my time as mayor aren’t just impressive—they’re historic. Over $1 billion in direct construction activity, sales tax revenue surpassing $100 million, and an economy that continues to create thousands of jobs. This isn’t just growth; it’s transformation.”
A City on the Rise
Edinburg remains one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation, ranking 12th in the U.S., 5th in Texas, and the fastest-growing large city in the Rio Grande Valley. With a population now exceeding 106,000 residents, the city’s trajectory is stronger than ever.
Unprecedented Economic Growth
Edinburg’s economy continues to soar, maintaining one of the lowest unemployment rates in the Valley at an average of 4.7% and generating over $1.9 billion in taxable retail sales. Housing development also reached new heights, with new home permit valuations surpassing $171 million—a $40 million increase from the previous year. Since 2022, nearly 4,900 new jobs have been created, reinforcing Edinburg’s status as a premier destination for businesses and families alike.
Historic Investments in Infrastructure
With a $90 million investment in infrastructure, Edinburg is making lasting improvements that will benefit residents for generations. Key highlights include:
- $10 million in drainage projects to enhance flood preparedness citywide.
- $23 million wastewater treatment plant expansion, increasing capacity to 13.5 million gallons per day.
- $2.5 million revitalization of Ebony Hills Golf Course, adding a new water feature and drainage enhancements.
- $5 million Public Works Service Center, a modern facility improving city operations and emergency response.
Commitment to Public Safety
Edinburg continues to prioritize public safety, with the Edinburg Police Department securing $3 million in grants to fund new officer positions and resources. Proactive efforts led to a 36% increase in DWI arrests, a 13% reduction in major crimes, and over 65,000 service calls handled in 2024.
The Edinburg Fire Department completed 4,800 hours of training and responded to over 3,100 emergency calls, ensuring rapid response across the city’s 166 square miles of service area.
A Historic Fourth All-America City Win
A defining moment of the year was Edinburg’s fourth All-America City Award—the city’s first win in 25 years and the most of any community south of San Antonio. Edinburg was one of only 10 cities nationwide to receive this prestigious honor, recognizing its commitment to civic engagement and community-driven initiatives.
A Message of Gratitude
As Mayor Garza nears the end of his term, he took a moment to reflect on his journey, expressing deep gratitude to his family, colleagues, and the residents of Edinburg. “Many of you know about my battle with prostate cancer, but I am determined to finish strong—just as this city continues to push forward. This was never my plan, but God has different plans for me. Edinburg, thank you for the opportunity to serve you.”
The event concluded with a look ahead, reinforcing that Excellence in Action is more than a theme—it’s the driving force behind Edinburg’s success. With a thriving economy, record-breaking growth, and a steadfast commitment to progress, the city’s future has never looked brighter.
