The Energía Tour, launched in 2018 with two schools, has now expanded to 15 schools, from elementary to high school. Founded by Christopher Pinilla, or Mr. Chris Hypnotyc, the tour celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month and promotes mental health awareness in Montgomery County. This year, the tour finished at Wheaton High School.
Wheaton High School Spanish teacher Yecenia Morales shared with us that the school has a Hispanic student population of over 57%, but less than 10% of the professional staff is Hispanic. She believes this has led to feelings of disconnect among some Hispanic students. “As a Spanish teacher with ten years of experience at Wheaton and an MCPS alum, I understand these feelings of not belonging. To address this, I partnered with fellow Spanish teacher Marcela Lovo-Elias to bring the Energía Tour to our school three years ago.” Morales told us.
Morales said, “After witnessing the tour’s positive impact on other MCPS schools, we contacted Christopher Pinilla, known as Mr. Chris Hypnotyc, who connects well with students and embodies pride in his work. The Energía Tour has since allowed our Hispanic students to celebrate their heritage and feel supported by someone who shares their background.”
Each year, Wheaton High School concludes Hispanic Heritage Month with the Energía Tour fiesta, fostering a safe space for friendships, community building, and improved mental health. The event features various activities, including dance competitions and a parade of nations, all promoting positivity and connection.
“Students eagerly anticipate the Energía Tour, which has positively influenced Wheaton High School and extended its reach to 15 communities this year, celebrating recognition and acceptance during Hispanic Heritage Month.” Morales told us.
In response to COVID-19, Chris revitalized the tour to include motivational talks, live DJ performances, and cultural celebrations featuring Latin music and dance, such as bachata and salsa. He personally funds DJs, equipment, and giveaways, demonstrating his commitment to uplifting the community and ensuring Hispanic youth feel recognized.
The tour empowers students to embrace their heritage, build community, and prioritize mental health. Special thanks go to the DJs and teachers who support the tour. With the help of Boost Mobile this year, they aim to reach even more individuals and continue to grow.
