As the fall colors in the north become more brilliant, people start to flock to Old Forge to leaf peep. Old Forge is typically one of the first stops along the way, and sometimes the only stop. Daniel Edmonds lives in Adams, New York and explains why there’s usually no need to drive any further.
“The Adirondacks have always been a place that’s just absolutely gorgeous. The terrain, the trees, the foliage, the amount of stuff that’s here in just one area that you can go to is amazing compared to the surrounding areas and other states. It’s all inclusive all in one place.”
Town of Webb Tourism Director Mike Farmer says after a hike and a couple pictures on top of Bald Mountain, people generally take a break in town, and during that break they spend some money.
“The fall foliage season is absolutely essential to our economy.”
Local businesses like the Blue Line Coffee House have noticed the better the colors, the better the business. Coffee House Supervisor Sarah Beck says you can count on it.
“I think we’re seeing a lot more business this fall season than opposed to our winter season, and we really draw a crowd for skiers and snowmobilers in the winter.”
The fall season is starting later than usual this year and that means a boost in tax dollars, but Mike Farmer says more importantly it helps business owners during the lull between fall and winter.
“Who really benefits is the community, the business community here.”
Mountain Man Supply Company Owner Devlin Hennessy has noticed more people have been getting out on the water because of the nice weather, but he says the brilliance of the colors also makes a difference.
“The colors definitely are an important part of what makes the season either really strong. The weather as well. The season’s been absolutely gorgeous. We’ve had nothing but you know beautiful day after beautiful day, so it really helps out with drawing people here even for day trips or a couple nights.”
