Monterey, Calif. (Amazing America) — Monterey, California, is a nature lover’s paradise. From up-close encounters with whales, sea lions and otters to ocean adventures and scenic trails, this Northern California gem offers plenty to explore.

1. Walk or Bike the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail
The 18-mile Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail runs from Castroville to Pacific Grove along the historic Southern Pacific Railway route. The path offers stunning coastal views and a relaxing way to explore Monterey on foot or by bike. Major attractions like the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row and Old Fisherman’s Wharf are easily accessible from the trail. Click here for more information.
2. Explore Old Fisherman’s Wharf
Overlooking Monterey Bay, Old Fisherman’s Wharf is known for its dining and shopping options. It also serves as a hub for fishing, sailing and marine life watching. The seals and sea lions often congregate here — clearly they feel right at home. Click here for more information.
3. Go Whale Watching
Whale watching is a year-round activity in Monterey, with many local tour companies offering excursions. We’re currently in the best window to spot blue whales, which is July through October.
4. Visit Cannery Row
Named after John Steinbeck’s 1945 novel, Cannery Row is a vibrant stretch of hotels, restaurants and attractions. It’s also a great place to rent paddleboards, kayaks or bikes for more coastal exploration. Click here for more information.
5. Dive Into the Monterey Bay Aquarium
Located on Cannery Row in a former sardine cannery, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is home to more than 550 marine species. Don’t miss the “Into the Deep: Exploring the Undiscovered Ocean” exhibit, which features the largest collection of deep-sea animals in North America.
