After weeks of anticipation, Quinn Ewers finally made his NFL debut on Sunday. With the Dolphins trailing the Browns 31-6, Miami turned to Ewers in the final quarter. While the Texas native only got a brief few minutes of action, he made the most of his first opportunity at the pro level.
Against the Browns’ secondary, Ewers completed five of his eight passes for 53 yards. The talented 22-year-old averaged 6.6 yards per throw and was able to take control of the football. That had not been the case for starter Tua Tagovailoa, who threw three interceptions before getting taken out.
While Ewers started the season as third on the depth chart, his hard work has paid off. The Dolphins’ season so far has been a disappointment as they are off to a 1-6 start. That has partly been due to injuries and spotty quarterback play. On Sunday, the Dolphins showed they are not afraid to switch things up if the results don’t improve.
For the former Longhorns star, it was an experience he will never forget.
“At the end of the day, it’s what I’ve always dreamed of, to be in the shoes that I’m in right now and just feel beyond blessed to go out there and play the game. Getting the feet wet”, Ewers told David Furones of The Sun Sentinel.
With the Dolphins’ playoff hopes slim, Ewers could get more action later this year. During his college career, he was one of the best in the nation and last year fell two wins short of a national title. He finished his Longhorns career with 9,128 passing yards and multiple awards. That is why the Dolphins scooped him up in the draft.
Although his first taste of NFL action was only a few series, he is far from done after giving a glimpse of what the future could hold.
